Create a story live with two published authors—fun for grades K–6! Everyone is welcome.
Join children’s book creators Kristin Varner and Rachel Michelle Wilson in the ultimate battle between WORDS and ART! Are words more effective in storytelling or is art the stronger competitor? They’ll make arguments for both and invite participants to help them decide which one is the true champion.
Throughout this hot debate, participants will collaborate with Varner and Wilson using writing prompts and live drawing to craft a complete story from beginning to end. Who will take home the trophy? Take part in this engaging and interactive presentation to find out!
Participants will leave with an understanding of story essentials and the confidence to both write and illustrate stories of their very own.
This event is designed for youth in grades K-6, but everyone is welcome to enjoy the presentation!
About the Presenters
Kristin Varner is an award-winning author, illustrator, and graphic novelist based in the Pacific Northwest. Kristin received her degree in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design and has created art for children's books, games, apparel, and toys. Her two middle grade novels, Horse Trouble (2021) and Dog Trouble (2024) are both recipients of the ALA Best Graphic Novels for Children Reading List awards. When she's not drawing cute animals in her studio, she's probably out riding a bike...or horse!
Rachel Michelle Wilson is a children’s book author-illustrator. Her debut How to Pee Your Pants: The Right Way (2024) was selected as one of Kirkus Reviews Best Picture Books of 2024 and an ALSC Notable Children’s Book of 2025. Her latest picture book To Catch a Ghost (2025) is about a new girl determined to trap a ghost for show-and-tell. When Rachel is not making books, you can find her paddle boarding across lakes, puzzling over logic problems, or hosting living room dance parties.
